Is my accent understandable and do I sound gay and have a lisp?

AstronomerWest8649
I always get comments that I sound gay/twink and that I have a lisp so if you guys were to be honest is this true? I don't really care about these comments either so its all good to be blunt, I was just curious. Also as I lived in Los Angeles my whole life, is my english understandable? if you couldn't understand my accent im 16 years old and I'm asian american, specifically korean-american. I don't hear a lisp exactly, but your S sounds are stronger and last a split second longer than they do for most Americans.

I do hear the lisp, but but I don’t hear any other aspect of the gay male speech pattern I hear an Interdental lisp – tongue pushes through the teeth; “sun” sounds like “thun”. Lisp Guys Sixteen Los These Personally Guess

I appreciate the feedback but the comments are lowkey contradicting each other so some more input would be nice 😭😭

I don't hear a lisp and you sound like a regular guy.

You have a lovely voice. It doesn't read 'gay' exactly (I'm an old dyke with years of experience in this area lol) but it could in a certain context - for example if you were at a gay bar I would assume you were gay. But out of that context not so much. I can't really hear a lisp, maybe a slightly drawn out 's'?

You sound hetero to me. American hetero accent to my ears, I can hear a touch of the lisp and I really like it! You’ve got a nice sounding accent/voice

I don’t hear gay, I just hear young Asian guy. I do hear a very slight lisp. But I don’t think I would have noticed it if you didn’t tell me to listen for it.

Yes. No. Yes.

You pronounce you S in a way that is somehow not very.. sharp? Drawn out isn't quite the way I'd describe it either. Not a lisp though. Otherwise, doesn't sound unusual to me at all. Over the next few years your voice is likely a drop a bit if you are 16, too. The people telling you this are just trying to define you. They don't deserve to do that. Best of luck in your future.

As an American , I don’t hear gay or lisp tbh 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, you sound like a 16-year-old guy lol. Your voice isn't going to be this deep, booming sound. I do not hear where people would say you're gay — I actually hear a young kid thats very well spoken. I hear a slight elongation of some "s" sounds, but i wouldn't quite call it a lisp. Also, your English is PERFECTLY understandable 🥰💜 Also, are you bilingual in Korean? I don't think many people know the pronunciation differences between English and Korean alphabets. That could absolutely affect some sounds! But do not be self conscious! Embrace being young and just be happy 🤗✨️

No lisp to me. Not exactly "gay" either, but a little of that tone, you might not like. Please, PLEASE don't start using your voice doing the vocal fry. It's what some men do to sound deeper or manlier or more cool and casual. It sounds like the end of a sentence, vibrating the voice a bit more. It sounds terrible and is not a good choice to hide the "gay" melody in your voice, if you even want that. If you want to hide it for whatever reasons, you can still sound different with your slightly higher higher voice you don't seem to like.

Your S is more sibilant, which people interpret as a lisp most of the time. You're 16, and your voice may deepen as you get older.
jolasveinarnir•
You sound like a 16-year-old Asian American boy from LA, lol. You don’t sound gay really at all — you just have a sort of higher pitched voice. You do have a slightly hypersibilant s.

It's sounds a little bit gay, but nowhere near pronounced enough that I would ever be sure.

To be honest, I don’t really hear the 'gayness' in your voice, at least not in the way you might be thinking. You sound pretty neutral to me, maybe just a bit on the softer side, but nothing that stands out as obviously 'gay' or anything. Your voice sounds average and totally normal overall. As for the lisp you mentioned, I can kind of hear what you’re talking about, but it’s subtle. When you pronounce your 'S' sounds, they do come off a bit thicker or heavier than usual, but it’s not super noticeable unless someone’s really listening for it.

I hear more a 16 year old who isn't super assertive than a gay dude. If you still have the same voice at 25, then yes, it would sound somewhat gay, though not in any kind of a definite way, just a vague inkling you might be gay.
PinkuDollydreamlife•
The lisp to my ears is a 100 percent there. But you don’t sound feminine.
swanson6666•
All I hear is a very obvious East Asian accent. Nothing else.

I don’t hear a lisp. And you don’t sound gay - can’t believe people actually say that to you. Ridiculous. You sound fine
Huge-Molasses-4199•
I don't understand why people are lying in the comments. The OP asked for a genuine opinion and y'all sugar-coating it or something? Like I don't get it! But OP you do sound gay and I hope it doesn't bother you. Peace!
Complete_Aerie_6908•
You do not sound like anything other than a young man speaking. I don’t detect a lisp.

So I read the comments and heard you talk. Do you sound like a stereotypical gay male a casting director would cast in a movie? I would say that you sound like you could pass for the gay male stereotype based on this sample. As someone who grew up in that area of the country, you have that ”oh my god, shut up!” Valley Girl sort of ”accent.” My daughter had this for a while when blending in with peers. If you want to change this, you’ll have to actively seek out the voice pattern you’d rather emulate. Or, you can wait to outgrow it or you can embrace this as you being you at your most comfortable. In regard to the lisp, you don’t have the stereotypical lisp, but the s is more pronounced. I have that too based on how teeth/mouth/tongue form it. I wouldn’t worry about that. A lot of people have a more pronounced s (I made myself listen for that pronounced s in others when I was feeling bad about my own—but I see this ”issue” being a made up one, like having wrinkles or cellulite…it’s natural and one way is not the ”normal” way.)

American here! I don't know why people are saying you don't have a lisp. It's not heavy or something to be ashamed about, but you can hear it with each S in this clip. It's very slight though, if it doesn't bother you I wouldn't worry about it Your voice is a little high like you said, which paired with a California accent is probably why people are saying you sound gay. The intonation is similar between both accents. Given that you're a young asian guy in california, I think you're probably fine on the "gay voice" front lol. As your voice matures and you get more confident you will get less of these comments

The upspeak (ending your sentence higher) signals gay to me and I do hear a lisp. Nothing wrong with either.

Your S's are slightly whistled. If you say the term "Reese's Pieces" you will hear it more easily because there's 4 S's. Technically, this is a slight lisp that many people will not perceive. It can be corrected (for some people) with speech therapy, while it's uncorrectable for others due to the structure of their mouth. Overall it's not too noticeable

To me your voice reads has higher pitch (think Justin Timberlake at 16). Hopefully this means you can sang. It doesn't read as effeminate. I don't hear a lisp either Anyway try not to focus on it. 99.9% of everyone hates their voice when hearing it played back. It'll get more full over time.
South_Stress_1644•
You sound like a male teenager of East Asian descent. That’s what’s throwing people off.
PukeyBrewstr•
I can hear the gay and a slight lisp. Maybe, like other people said, is the way you say your S.
cum-yogurt•
There’s a hint of gay, I wouldn’t be anything close to certain but I might suspect you’re gay. English is great, I would think you’re native.
PerformanceDouble924•
You sound fine. If you don't care, then don't worry about it. If you want to sound more traditionally masculine, you can talk from the back of your throat and use less "up talk," or if you want to sound less masculine you can do the opposite. I wouldn't worry about it though, you sound like a normal kid.
Ta7on•
I don't hear gay or lips. I hear that you probably play valorant or league of legends though. You sound just like the average Asian American gamer boy™
Perfect_Homework790•
TBH gay accent and Asian American accent can sound kinda similar. If you were white dude in his 20s I'd assume you were gay, but not if you're an Asian teenager. A bit of a lisp yes. Listen to the way you pronounce 'lisp'.
FinnishGreed•
I hear the gay but not the lisp. It has to do with your pitch but also your very friendly and inoffensive vocal melody.
