How's the word "won" (Korean currency) pronounced in Squid game?

angowalnuts
It sounds like w-uh-n to me. So every time they're talking about money, it sounds like 1001 instead of 1000 won. Is that how you pronounce it? "W-uh-n", or am I just mishearing it?

Korean speaker here. Won is pronounced exactly the same as won (past tense of win) or the number one.

It sounds like "one".

As an English person I would have assumed that Won rhymed with gone/don/ron, not one/gun But the proper Korean pronunciation may be different

This seems like a strange question on the English forum… Since you’re asking about the pronunciation of a Korean word. That said, I’m a native English speaker who lived in Korea for two years. It’s pronounced as described by the native Korean speaker above… Like the past tense of win (won). Like the number one. Like the weapon gun. I’ve never seen squid game, so I have no idea whether anyone on that show speaks correctly.

Just went and listened to the first instance I could find of them saying “Won” in the dubbed version. It sounds kind of in between the two pronunciations mentioned here, but closer to rhyming with gone (which is how I generally pronounce it as a native English speaker)

I rhyme it with "gone".
