How to be really prophicient in English.

cucharitalove
I have four months in a job that requires to speak English with real customers everyday by phone and even though I'm getting more confident in the language I got a strong accent and also I don't feel confident to talk about something that is not related to the technical vocabulary that I use in my job. Any advice?

Listen to podcasts and watch English-speaking YouTube creators, or watch TV shows that have a lot of conversations in them, to get an idea of what laid-back casual speech looks like.  Also, it's spelled proficient :)

> I got a strong accent I've got... > I don't feel confident to talk I don't feel confident **enough** to talk --- My advice is, practice as much as possible. Speak aloud, even when alone. Record yourself, and listen back on it. Describe *anything,* any time. Say what you're doing. "I am standing up, I am going to the kitchen, I am boiling the kettle, I am making a cup of tea". Then, describe what you've done - "I went to the kitchen and made tea". And what you *will* do later - "I will go to the shops and buy some bread." Go for a walk, and describe everything that you see, in English. Think of interesting phrases to describe things. Then, you can do the same walk again and remember the phrases. Use every possible opportunity to practice speaking aloud. If you have friends who speak English, ask them if you can practice - chat to them about anything, in English. Basically, practice.

You can try using chatGPT to discuss some topic that you are thinking about. This practise works for me and shows me for example what vocabulary is hard to recall when I want to express some ideas.

You could get on an English learning Discord that does voice chat and talk to others whenever you have spare time. It's passive enough to not really intrude on your life but immensely helpful.

In this app it shows you a random topic every day and you have 10 seconds to start talking about it in English: [https://biglanguages.com/often/](https://biglanguages.com/often/) It's a good way to think about new vocabulary and prepare for the pressure of real life conversations.
