Daily idiom: bet the farm on something

bet the farm on something >!to risk a lot for something!< Examples: - I wouldn't bet the farm on this newsletter if I weren't sure some people need it. - Are you sure you want to bet the farm here? These stocks seems pretty risky to me.

I've never heard a single person use this expression outside of language-learning classes. I know it, but I think it's anachronistic.

One can also have “bought the farm” which means to die
