Do you use ChatGPT to learn English?

upforest
Hey everyone! I’ve been curious—has anyone here been using ChatGPT or other Large Language Model apps to learn or practice English? It seems like a pretty handy tool for improving writing and grammar skills. Plus, it’s available anytime, which is great for busy schedules. Personally, I’ve been trying it out, and here’s what I’ve noticed so far: 1. **Grammar Help:** If I’m unsure about my sentence structure, ChatGPT explains it clearly and offers corrections. 2. **Vocabulary Expansion:** I can ask it to suggest synonyms or more natural phrases, which helps me sound more fluent. 3. **Custom Exercises:** I can ask it to create quizzes or scenarios tailored to what I want to practice, like idioms, phrasal verbs, or even formal emails. That said, I sometimes wonder how accurate its advice is, especially for slang or cultural nuances. Has anyone experienced that? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Never ever use chatGPT! Ever!

Outside of my own disdain for OpenAI and LLMs in general (because of their impact on the environment, theft of content and artwork, and more), I personally wouldn’t trust ChatGPT or another LLM to accurately teach me a language. AI models simply do math to create results—they can’t understand nuance or the complexities of real-world language use. They provide a lot of bad information, a lot of times in a way that makes it seem accurate but isn’t. I understand the appeal because of the ubiquity of these LLMs now, but I would stick to tried-and-true methods of language learning. If you do use AI, be sure to go into it understanding that it’s just a machine and that you’re going to need to constantly check it for accuracy.

AI doesn’t think, it can’t teach you anything. It can replicate correct sounding speech, but it is frequently complete nonsense. It’s also obviously when you write with it because everything has a big numbered list in the middle.

You will find a lot of people inordinately hate all ideas related to AI. ChatGPT can definitely teach you new words and phrases, and most of the time, it'll read like a native writer. AI should not be used for creating art or scientific research, but as a conversational chatbot, that's where it excels and has a proper use.
